In 2370 joined Maquis resistance. Served under Chakotay (see file) as engineer on Maquis ship that was lost in the Badlands in 2371. This ship was being sought by the U.S.S. Voyager when the Voyager lost contact with Starfleet on stardate 48307.5. Since recent re-establishment of contact with Voyager, it has been learned that the Maquis personnel have been integrated with the surviving Voyager crew in the Delta Quadrant.
Despite an altercation with her then-superior Lieutenant Carey, Torres was appointed chief engineer of the Voyager in 2371. Torres has served in this capacity with distinction, despite occasional discipline problems.
In 2371, Torres and several other crew members participated in a clandestine exchange, against the captain's direct orders and the Prime Directive, with the citizens of the planet Sikaris . Federation cultural material was traded for trajector technology which theoretically could return Voyager quickly to the Alpha Quadrant. The technology turned out to be incompatible with Voyager's systems. Torres, along with Lieutenant Tuvok, took responsibility and was severely reprimanded.
In 2372, stardate 49447, Torres saved the inhabitants of the planet Rakosa V from a Cardassian missile ("the Dreadnought") that had been swept into the Delta Quadrant by the same entity that brought the Voyager there. The Dreadnought, which Torres had once re-programmed for Maquis purposes, was forced by her to self-destruct before it could attack the Rakosans.
In 2374, Torres successfully adapted the Emergency Medical Hologram program to be transmitted through an alien communications array back to the Alpha Quadrant. The EMH rescued the Federation ship Prometheus from a Romulan takeover, and re-established Voyager's communications with the Federation.
